Workshop on food Adulteration

The PG and Research Department of Chemistry organized a One Day Workshop on Food Adulteration on 22.09.2026 at 1:30 PM in the New Seminar Hall.

The workshop was organized with the aim of creating awareness among students on safe food habits and the harmful effects of food adulteration. The programme was organized under the themes “Safe Food, Healthy You, Brighter Future”, “Real food nourishes, adulteration harms”, “Choose safe food, choose a better tomorrow” and “Eat Safe, Live Safe, Stay Healthy”.

Dr. H. Kohila Subathra Christy, Head and Associate Professor of Chemistry and Convenor of the workshop, delivered the welcome address. She welcomed the gathering and briefed about the importance of the workshop and the need for awareness on food adulteration in day-to-day life.

The resource persons were students of PG and Research Department of Chemistry. The students explained the adulteration using charts and PPT presentation. They explained the common adulterants present in vegetables, fruits, milk, oil and spices and their ill effects on human health. The chemical methods and simple laboratory techniques to detect adulteration and to differentiate pure and adulterated food were demonstrated by the students.

Hands-on training using food adulterants was given by the students. Students were trained to detect adulterants in various food items through simple chemical tests. Students' performances were also organized to showcase the ill effects of adulterated food and to create awareness on safe food consumption.

A Quiz was conducted on food adulteration and food safety to test the knowledge gained by the participants. A Debate by Students was also conducted on the topic of food safety and adulteration, in which students actively participated and shared their views.

107 students participated enthusiastically and benefited from the workshop.

Dr. D. Shanmuga Priya, Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Coordinator of the workshop, proposed the vote of thanks. She thanked the management, principal, faculty members and students for their support in making the workshop a grand success.

The workshop was very informative, useful and created awareness about food safety, Good Food, Good Health and Good Life among the students.
